THE JUDGE: Although a trifle long,
this film can boast of a brilliant performance by Robert Downey Jr. and an
equally superb one from Robert Duvall.
The story of a hotshot Chicago
lawyer who returns to his Indiana hometown to attend the funeral of his
mother only to find his father (the judge) accused of murder. As the story and the trial unfold we observe
this dysfunctional family (there are three sons in all) trying to understand
each other and forgive each other for any number of sins that I won't go into
here. Wonderful supporting players
inclued Billy Bob Thorton as the rival lawyer, Vera Farmiga as a past love
interest, Vincent D'Onofrio as the oldest brother and an outstanding Jeremy
Strong as the youngest and mentally disabled brother. All in all, a fascinating film thanks to a
staggeringly talented cast.
