ST. VINCENT: An almost certain Oscar
nomination for Bill Murray is this delightful, bittersweet, comic film about a
misanthropic, hedonistic veteran who inherits new neighbors in the form of
Melissa McCarthy and her son (newcomer Jadean Lieberher). When circumstances force the young boy and
his neighbor to "bond," the elder soon becomes a mentor of sorts but
perhaps teaching the wrong things. Or is
he? Naomi Watts is quite wonderful as
the strip club/prostitute who Murray uses to satisfy his needs and in turn,
fulfill some of hers. This is what we
always call a "feel good" movie but it is also a brilliant look at
live and all its foibles. By the way,
McCarthy gives her best performance to date mixing humor and pathos with
tenderness. I loved it.
